Important Changes to Our Bedrail Policy

December 9, 2022

Effective immediately, Mt. Assisi Place is amending its use of bedrails to align with updated regulations put forth by the Pennsylvania Department of Human Services. DHS now strongly recommends that bedrails — even half rails — not be used at any time or for any purpose. The agency cites the potential risks of bedrails, which include strangulation, suffocation, and more serious fall-related injuries should a Resident “climb” over the rail.

There are alternative assistive devices available, such as enablers, grip handles, transfer handles and trapeze bars. There are only a few Residents here at Mt. Assisi Place who have half siderails. Those will be taken off the beds and will need to be replaced as soon as possible with another assistive device, such as a “bed buddy,” which can be secured to the bedframe and provide the Resident with something to hold on to while getting in and out of bed.

If your loved one is among those currently using a siderail, we ask that you obtain a “bed buddy,” or other appropriate device as soon as possible. If you are unsure about where or what to purchase, please contact Diane Ott by phone at 412-761-1999 or by email at dott@mtassisiplace.com.
